A location or place on Foursquare is any physical location, such as a place of business, a park, or private residence where users can check in, win badges, and fight over mayorships.

An authorized manager or employee of a location and/or location can ‘claim’ their location in order to offer specials, create events and to see information about visitors to their location.  For more information on what it means to claim a location, please see this article.
